2003 Lockwood de Forest Award

Design, construction documentation and construction-phase services for a renovation of the 400 block through 1200 block of the main business corridor for the City of Santa Barbara. The project involved design of new sidewalks, and included renovation of existing landscaping, installation of new landscaping and irrigation, and new street furniture. The design was intended to replace a semi-mall design that had existed in place since 1967. Objectives of the design were to improve business visibility; maintain and enhance landscape diversity; improve pedestrian circulation and safety; acknowledge significant architectural features and integrate them into the streetscape; introduce design features to express the individuality of buildings and businesses; provide spatial opportunities for display and promotion of the arts; provide amenities for the comfort and convenience of shoppers; and conform to a limited budget.

The process of design involved public meetings with business and property owners, Parking District, Postal Service, Public Works Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Visual Arts in Public Places Committee, the Downtown Organization, as well as interested citizens. The project was completed in 2007 and received the Lockwood de Forest Award.
